Ysternia or Hysternia is a picturesque village (20 km away from Tinos town) – so called because it is situated on the ysterna (end) of the island – clinging to the slopes of Mount Meroviglia, at 300 m height. Marble-paved lanes, arches, countryards, two-store houses with marble lintels. The village, with its superb views of Syros, really is a balcony overlooking the Aegean. The village has brought a number of wonderful sculptors into the world, among them G. And I. Vitalis, L. Lamera, L. Sochou αnd A. Sochou, who became a distinguished sculptor in wood.
In the village you can find the Museum of Isternian Artists where works and biographies of the artists are exposed.
Mylon, to the north of the village, is the most remarkable spot in the area. The ruined windmills – visible proof of Mylon’s rise and fall – are now listed buildings. To the south is the Ysternia (Ammos) Bay, with its amazing sandy beach. An old marble-paved road connects the village of Ysternia with its beach.
The Bay of Hysternion, one of the most enchanting bays with picturesque houses other snow-whited and other stone or mud-coloured, is 23km North West from the city of Tinos and the seaport of Hysternion.You will find traditional cafes, which offer local raki and home-made sweets, traditional grocer’s shops, taverns with local delicious meals.
How to get there:
As soon as you arrive at the port, follow the suburban street to the village Pyrgos, by following the signs. You are heading west. About 20 km later you will see a sign for the Ormos Village as well as one of the hotel. Follow the sign and you are there after 3 km.
Buses also leave from the port 4 times a day to the village. The hotel is 2 km away from the bus stop. You can call the hotel and arrange that someone picks you up from there.
